As Sunday School ended this morning, I made my way down to the sanctuary to for the Sunday Worship Service. I picked up a bulletin and sat down, and looked around the room. Immediately, I wanted to leave. For I realized that the people here were different from me. Some of them had different political views from me, some had different theological views, and some were even firm in their beliefs. I wanted to retreat; to go where everyone agreed with me.
But I didn't leave church. I stayed in the seat, and faced down the hard truth that not everyone agrees with me on politics and religion, and that these differences don't mean that only one of us has a relationship with God. I think part of the problem is because I view Christianity as radical. There's nothing wrong with holding that position, but it just means I need to be careful not say that only those with radical views like mine have a relationship with God.
And this is why I think it's good for people to go to churches they don't totally agree with every now and then. It reminds us that we (the individual) don't represent the entirety of Christianity.
