How To Not Become Polarized

One large problem in today's society is that people are becoming polarized. This is especially true in politics and religions. People are taking one side or the other, and fail to see the common ground they share. I give in to this as much as the next person.

One thing that is very helpful for me (or would be if I followed it more) is to reflect on my activities, specifically paying attention to my consumption of news on views I don't agree with. Colbert Report is an excellent example. I love watching Colbert, but it certainly doesn't help me to view Republicans as respectable equals. Similarly, I used to have a habit of reading conservative Christian reviews of music I liked (but knew they wouldn't). Obviously that doesn't help me see our common ground either.

Ultimately, the problem with polarization is that it dehumanizes the other side, and leads us to be arrogant about our own opinions.
